GRAHAM COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
|
|
Local Activities. One of the finer points of Graham County is the seclusion and natural settings. But there are a wide range of activities that visitors can take advantage of:
- National Forests - There are several National Forests within a short drive of the Mansion. Take a seldom hiked trail to a crystal clear waterfall. Hike to a mountain top for a quiet picnic. A photographers paradise around every bend in the trail.
- Whitewater Rafting - The Cheoah River will soon provide limited days on what many consider the best whitewater river on the east coast. The nearby Nantahala River offers whitewater rafting for the entire family. The Ocoee, a few hours distant, provides a wilder ride on the 1996 Olympic whitewater course for the more adventurous.
- Horseback Riding - Let us make your reservation at the Lonesome Dove Stables for a guided tour of the mountains on horse back.
- Scenic Road Tours - Drive the Cherohala Skyway for some of the most scenic views in the entire Appalachians. For those seeking more excitement, try the Tail of the Dragon with 318 curves in 11 miles on US 129. Only an hour distant is the southern beginning of the Blue Ridge Parkway at Cherokee, North Carolina. The scenic route on US 64 from Franklin to Cashiers attracts many visitors each year, especially during the fall colors.
- Harrah's Casino in Cherokee - Try your luck at the only casino in western North Carolina.
- Appalachian History - Explore Appalachian Culture by visiting many of the historical areas surrounding the Great Smoky Mountains.
- Outdoor Recreation - Native trout fishing in mountain streams and lakes. Seasonal hunting for black bear and wild boar. Winter ski resorts are within a two hour drive. Mountain biking at the nearby Tsali Recreation Area with over 40 miles of challenging single track.
